Plus Shops using Avalara taxes had incorrect calculations

Incident Report for Shopify

Resolved

There was code shipped that caused Shopify to send the store’s address as the destination address during the service disruptions. This was originally designed as a failsafe to ensure taxes were charged for all types of orders, including orders that don’t require shipping.

The code that was shipped caused us to default to the above address, instead of the correct ones. This code change was reverted.

We are currently adding monitoring around this “state” and testing around specifics of a checkout to make sure that if the origin and destination addresses are the same, these will be flagged to our operational team - we’re also investigating the possibility of removing this case, or being more stringent as to when it applies.

These efforts should mitigate a similar failure in the future.
